"To go fast, go alone. To go far, go together." African Proverb (Please read below in Dutch)
The other morning I was asked this question: “What would be the arguments with which I can convince my optician to donate to TWOBILLIONEYES Foundation instead of to another foundation to which he already donates?”
I found this a very good question, and therefore want to answer the question openly so our policy is clear herein.
- If your optician already donates, that's all wonderful and he / she may decide to whom he donates. Besides, the optician can also consider to donate to both organizations.
- If your optician does not donate yet he / she can consider to, based on our presentation on our website.
To donate is to grant, as people have worked hard for their money and should ultimately decide for themselves what they want to spend it on. Below I would like to state our vision and I would also like to point out that we really appreciate the work of other organizations and that we wish to join forces with them.
We respect and appreciate all initiatives undertaken on humanitarian grounds to promote clear vision. We believe that clear vision is a basic human right to which every person should have access. That is why we want to promote good visibility so that people can develop themselves better, in order to:
- obtain better access to education and employment through which
- a more equal distribution of knowledge and productivity could originate so
- people can make a more meaningful contribution which
- will promote the harmony and unity in the world.
The challenge is huge, we have a backlog of approximately 1 billion people who are visually impaired. We therefore welcome any initiative to correct this and we will seek cooperation with them. Because together we move forward. We do not think that we have a monopoly on wisdom or that our solution is the only right solution. We do not want to reinvent the wheel, no, we want to work with a learning attitude. This is especially important with today's ever faster changing world. We believe that the diversity of solutions will pave the way to reach many more people. This diversity of approach will just encourage the synergy that will lead to more people with clear vision.
We are also in consultation with other organizations in both the Netherlands and abroad, to determine how we can reach our goal together better. Our aim is to build a sustainable solution by building capacity among the local population so that they can do this work themselves. Consequently production and independence increase. We realize that this is the extended route, but we believe that over time we can help more people this way.
That does not mean that we don’t welcome it when other organizations themselves provide clear vision directly with the help of professionals from the west. In fact, we are happy to aid them to become even more effective through use of our spectacles scheme. It is not only good for the people who are helped immediately, but it also creates awareness among the locals that there are resources for clear vision, which in turn helps us with our long-term deployment. This way we help each other, move forward together and provide a better prospect.
And thus we learn intercontinentally … To go far, go togehter.

Ik kreeg vanochtend de vraag: “Wat zijn de argumenten waarmee ik mijn opticien ervan kan overtuigen aan de stichting TWOBILLIONEYES te doneren ipv aan een andere stichting waaraan hij reeds doneert?”
Ik vond dat een heel goede vraag en geef daarom ook het antwoord hier openlijk zodat ons beleid hierin duidelijk is.
A) Als uw opticien al doneert dan is dat al prachtig en mag hij zelf bepalen aan wie hij doneert. Daarnaast kan de opticien ook overwegen om aan beide organisaties doneren.
B) Als uw opticien nog niet doneert kan hij/zij dat overwegen op basis van onze presentatie op onze website.
Doneren is gunnen, is een vrijwillige bijdrage, daar hebben mensen hard voor gewerkt en mogen ze zelf ook bepalen waaraan ze dat uit willen geven. Hieronder leg ik graag nog uit wat onze visie is en dat wij het werk van andere organisaties juist bijzonder op prijs stellen en graag met ze willen samenwerken.
Wij respecteren èn waarderen alle initiatieven die worden ondernomen uit humanitaire gronden om goed zicht te bevorderen. Wij geloven dat goed zicht een basis recht is en dat ieder mens daar recht op heeft. (2x recht, voorstel: dat goed zicht een grondrecht is waar ieder mens toegang toe zou moeten hebben.) Daarom willen wij goed zicht bevorderen zodat mensen:
- zich beter kunnen ontwikkelen
- ze beter toegang tot onderwijs en werk kunnen hebben
- er betere verdeling van kennis en productiviteit ontstaat
- mensen een betekenisvollere bijdrage kunnen leveren en
- de harmonie en eenheid in de wereld wordt bevorderd.
De uitdaging is heel groot, we hebben een achterstand van ongeveer 1 miljard mensen die maatschappelijk blind zijn. Daarom juichen we ieder initiatief juist toe en zoeken wij de samenwerking met ze op. Want samen komen we verder. Wij denken niet de wijsheid in pacht te hebben en dat onze oplossing de enige goede oplossing is. Wij willen het wiel niet opnieuw uitvinden, nee, wij willen juist werken met een lerende houding. Dat is zeker belangrijk met huidige steeds sneller veranderende wereld. Wij geloven dat de verscheidenheid van oplossingen de weg zal banen naar het bereiken van veel meer mensen. Deze verscheidenheid in benadering zal juist de synergie bevorderen en dat zal leiden tot meer goed zicht.
Wij zijn ook in gesprek met andere organisaties, in zowel NL als daarbuiten, hoe we samen ons doel beter kunnen bereiken. Ons oogmerk is het opbouwen van een duurzame oplossing door capaciteit op te bouwen bij de lokale bevolking, zodat ze in staat zijn dit werk zelf te kunnen doen. Zo vergroten we de productie én zelfstandigheid. We beseffen dat dit een langere weg is maar geloven dat we daar op termijn meer mensen mee kunnen helpen.
Dat neemt niet weg dat wij het toejuichen wanneer andere organisaties zelf direct goed zicht brengen met professionals uit het westen. Sterker nog, wij helpen hen daarin nog effectiever te zijn door ze gebruik te laten maken van ons brillenconcept. Het is niet alleen goed voor de mensen die direct geholpen worden maar het creëert ook de bewustwording bij de lokale bevolking dat er ook middelen zijn voor goed zicht, hetgeen ons weer helpt met onze lange termijn uitrol. Zo helpen we elkaar en komen we samen verder in het bieden van een beter vooruitzicht.
En, zo leren we van elkaar, intercontinentaal … To go far, go together.
